Script, Image and the Culture of Writing in the Ancient World

Cairo Photographic Archive

In the 1970s and 1980s an International Photographic Mission initiated and sponsored by the Association Internationale de Papyrologues and UNESCO made slides and photographs of the several thousand published Greek papyri held in the Cairo Museum. This unique photographic archive, which consists of about 7000 slides and large format negatives, in equal proportions, held at Oxford, Brussels, Cologne, Heidelberg and Copenhagen, has not hitherto been digitised. The CSAD is currently undertaking a programme of cataloguing and digitising the photographs with a view to making them more readily available to the scholarly community; this project is a component of the Script, Image and the Culture of Writing in the Ancient World programme funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

By October 2003, digitisation of the Archive had advanced to encompass almost half of the Archive. The following pages offer sample images of a small number of Zenon papyri.

Update (31-07-2006)

A prototype version of the online catalogue, offering access to almost all the images, is now available at:
