P.Oxy. XLIX 3484

Freight Contract

ed. J. E. G. Whitehorne

EES: Papyrology Room, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

This document is too scrappy for its sense to be entirely certain, but it looks to be the earliest surviving example of a private contract for river transport. A party whose identity is unclear enters into an arrangement with three named shippers to carry wheat from Oxyrhynchus to Euergetis and return with a cargo of wine.
