What Did We Do? First of all, we had to learn about what oral history was, and how to do it. We watched a video and read books about Travellers' Lives in Gloucestershire - which had been made with schoolchildren on the Gloucestershire Socrates Oral History Project. We also read and wrote about people's memories of coming to Gloucester from Jamaica, in A Long Five Years, by Gail Johnson. We discussed the differences between the kind of things that are talked about, and the kind of things that are written down. We worked with our parents, carers, and grandparents, to record stories from our and their childhoods. We drew family trees. We found out about asking different kinds of questions and we wrote interview scripts. Mr and Mrs Pollard and Mr Holder came into our classroom, and talked to us about their childhood memories of growing up in Gloucester and Cheltenham. |
