David Lewis and the Jews of Ptolemaic Egypt

We are delighted to announce that Alan Bowman will be delivering the  David Lewis Lecture at 5 o'clock on the 28th of May.

The epigraphical appendix ('The Jewish inscriptions of Egypt') which David Lewis contributed in 1964 to the third volume of the Corpus of Jewish Papyri (Corpus papyrorum iudaicarum) provides a starting point for Professor Alan Bowman to explore the remarkable history and distinctiveness of the Jewish community of Egypt during the period of Ptolemaic rule. The lecture, which marks the 30th anniversary of Professor Bowman's establishment of the Centre for the Study of Ancient Documents, connects his own engagement with the history of Egypt, culminating in the recent publication of the Corpus of Ptolemaic Inscriptions, with David Lewis' lifelong interest in Jewish history.

The lecture starts at 5 o'clock. It will be held in the lecture theatre and will be followed by a drinks reception. All are very welcome to attend.
