We are delighted to announce that Marietta Horster will be delivering the 26th David Lewis Memorial Lecture on 'Remembering a Roman life' .
Marietta Horster has held the Chair of Ancient History at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz since 2010. Her research focuses on the organisation of Greek and Roman cults, the organisation and prosopography of the administration in the Roman Empire and Late Antiquity, and the transfer of knowledge and the transmission of textual culture in the ancient world.
After studying in Lausanne, Bonn and Cologne, she obtained her doctoral degree in 1995 at Cologne University, with a dissertation entitled, ‘Bauinschriften römischer Kaiser. Untersuchungen zu Inschriftenpraxis und Bautätigkeit in Städten des westlichen Imperium Romanum in der Zeit des Prinzipats'. For her habilitation at University of Rostoc in 2003, she researched the ‘Landbesitz griechischer Heiligtümer in archaischer und klassischer Zeit’. She became the Director of the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum of the Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften in 2018, and is currently coordinating an EU-Innovative Training Network of eleven doctoral students who are studying inscribed poetry as a feature of popular culture in the Roman imperial period (ITN: CARMINA).
This lecture will be held at 5 o'clock in the Classics Faculty lecture theatre at the Ioannou Centre, 66 St Giles Oxford OX13LU. It is freely open to all who wish to attend, and will be followed by a drinks reception. We look forward to seeing you there.
